The HHAWS caters for a wide area of communities - Somerset West, Strand, Gordon's Bay, Sir Lowry's Pass, Macassar and Grabouw.

The HHAWS receives no monetary help from the government so must raise all its own funds for the upkeep of the kennels, feed and care for stray and unwanted animals as well as paying veterinary costs for the animals in their care.

The kennel facility in Gordon's Bay operates at a maximum capacity of 160 dogs and 60 cats.
